AFTER BEING RANKED as high as 10th in the nation last spring, Norfolk Academy intends on carrying that momentum into this season that should end with the Bulldogs winning another Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools girls soccer championship.
But momentum won't be the only thing the Bulldogs, who finished 20-1-1 last year, carry.
Tidewater Player of the Year Angela Hucles returns for her fifth season on the forward line and should help Norfolk Academy run its 125-0-1 TCIS record even further.
``We'll have to count on her more heavily this year,'' said Bulldogs coach Kevin Sims, who lost five starters to graduation.
But looking at Hucles' stats, it's hard to imagine how any player could match the kind of season she had as a sophomore. She scored 45 goals and had 25 assists en route to becoming the Bulldogs all time leading scorer. Hucles, beginning her fifth season for the Bulldogs, brings with her 105 goals and 66 assists.
Because it is her fifth year, there has been some question as to whether she can compete with the Bulldogs against the public schools.
However, Sims says that Hucles and her No. 1 ranked team are in the clear.
``It's only her fourth year in terms of eligibility,'' Sims said. ``She didn't play against the public schools when she was younger.''
But she's sure made her mark on the TCIS and will continue to do so this year, leaving the race for second wide open.
Norfolk Christian, returning three all-conference selections, is the front-runner, with Norfolk Collegiate not too far behind.
