James F. Sutphin, 69, died April 5, 1995, in a Norfolk hospital.
Mr. Sutphin was born in Hillsville, Va., and was a Presbyterian. He was retired as a superintendent from the U.S. Postal Service after 37 years and was also retired as supervisor of the mailroom at ODU after seven years. He was a member of Masonic Lodge (NU)193, A.F & A.M in Hillsville, Scottish Rite Bodies and Khedive Shrine Temple of Norfolk, and was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Verlie L. Sutphin; a daughter, Cheryl D. Sutphin of Norfolk; two stepdaughters, Marene Alvarez of El Paso, Texas and Sandra L. Littman of Virginia Beach; a sister, Mary Ellen Davidson of Hillsville, Va.; a brother, Richard Sutphin of Radford, Va.; and seven grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, by the Rev. Charles K. Blalock. The family will receive friends in the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday. The body is being sent to Memorial Funeral Home, Princeton, W.Va., for burial.
