ROBBERY SUSPECT FLEEING POLICE CRASHES; 3 HURT

An armed-robbery suspect and two motorists were injured in a two-car accident late Tuesday after the suspect fled from Virginia Beach police, authorities said.

The crash occurred shortly before midnight on Indian River Road near the Ford Motor Co. plant after a brief police pursuit.

About 11:30 p.m., Virginia Beach police spotted a car that looked like the getaway vehicle used in an armed robbery of a gas-station clerk in the 5300 block of Indian River Road about 10 minutes earlier.

When the driver refused to stop, two police cars pursued the car west on Indian River Road into Norfolk. After a four-minute chase, the suspect's vehicle struck another car, slightly injuring the car's two occupants.

The suspect and the two injured motorists were taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. The two motorists, whose names were not available, were treated and released.

The robbery suspect, identified as John B. Ewing, 32, of the 1000 block of Mains Creek Road in Chesapeake, remains in the hospital with a broken leg.

Ewing was charged with armed robbery.

A magistrate was taken to the hospital, where he ordered that Ewing be held without bond. He is under guard.

Other charges are pending.

No Norfolk police officers were involved in the pursuit.
