RED-WOLF BILL HEADS TOWARD VOTE IN HOUSE

A bill that would allow Beaufort County residents to shoot red wolves that wander on to private property cleared its first legislative hurdle Wednesday.

A committee voted unanimously to send the proposal to the full House after its sponsor claimed the federal agency that coordinates the red wolf program lied about it.

``Fish and Wildlife are a bunch of liars and cheats,'' said Rep. Zeno Edwards, a Beaufort County Republican.

His bill would add Beaufort to the counties - including Hyde and Washington - where stray wolves can be shot if they leave national park property, where they have been reintroduced by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The full House gave final approval Wednesday to a bill adding Run Hill in Kill Devil Hills to the state park system. by CNB
