A union-linked organization has accused supermarket giant Food Lion of selling outdated over-the-counter drugs in 70 stores. Consumers United with Employees, based in Washington, D.C., said it visited 116 stores in 14 states and found outdated packages of pain reliever, cough syrup and other items on the shelves in more than half of the locations. A Food Lion in Norfolk was listed as carrying six outdated items. But one health expert said it's unlikely that using an over-the-counter drug past its expiration date would be harmful. CUE's survey was the third time since February 1994 that it has accused Food Lion of questionable safety and sanitation practices. Food Lion claims that it is being unfairly singled out because its workers are not unionized. Food Lion said its own study showed its competitors also sell out-of-date drugs. (Staff and wire reports)
