AT PIT, OTHER STATS OVERSHADOW SCORING IN EFFORT TO IMPRESS

Alabama's Jason Caffey came to the 43rd annual Portsmouth Invitational Tournament to prove he ``can do the dirty work.''

The 6-foot-8 All-Southeastern Conference forward really wasn't even interested that he had contributed 16 points in helping K-Plus to a 96-93 victory over the Naval Shipyard in the opening game Wednesday night at Churchland.

``How many rebounds did I get?'' Caffey asked. He pulled down 13, seven on offense.

``That's what I came here to prove,'' he said. ``I want to show I can play power forward in the NBA and doing the dirty work is how I intend to get there.

``Scoring points is a bonus for me. We have a team full of guys who can score.''

In the second game, Beach/Barton Ford bested Sales Systems Ltd., 88-80, behind 20 points from Texas-El Paso's Antoine Gillespie.

The winners advance to Friday's semifinals. The two losers vie this afternoon at 3:15 p.m. in the consolation bracket.

Wake Forest's Scooter Banks, a last-minute replacement for Purdue's Cuonzo Martin, sparked the K-Plus scoring with 17 points.

``I want to show the scouts I can hit the jumper,'' Banks said. ``I didn't have to do that at Wake Forest, and I hear that's what I must prove to the pros that I can do.'' He made four jumpers.

Old Dominion's Petey Sessoms, given what might have been the PIT's largest standing ovation in pre-game introductions, showed well for the Naval Shipyard. He scored 20 points, snagged eight rebounds, blocked two shots, had one assist and made one steal.

But he was unhappy that his team didn't win. And he wasn't pleased with six turnovers.

Troy Brown of Providence led the Shipyard scoring with 22.

Texas Tech's Mark Davis was the scoring leader in the second game, canning 24 for Sales Systems.
