HOT ROD JAMOREE TO BENEFIT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

``I had been thinking about how much I enjoy my car - what good therapy it is to work on,'' said Chesapeake artist Mark Carey. ``So I thought a car show would be a good thing to do.''

Sheriff John N. Newhart agreed, so the two organized the Hot Rod Jamoree, which will take place from noon until 6 p.m. Saturday at Chesapeake City Park to raise money for a medical scholarship fund in memory of Carey's wife.

``The response was tremendous,'' Carey said. ``Everybody wanted to help.''

Newhart said the response ``just shows the generosity and caring of the citizens and businesses of Chesapeake. Everybody came through with goods, services and volunteer time.''

Car owners who want to display their vehicles have to pay an entry fee, either in advance or at the day of the show. All entries will be eligible for prizes via a raffle system. The grand prize is a custom paint job from Jack's Body Shop.

Besides cars of all makes, sizes, shapes and colors, the event will feature a petting zoo, carnival rides and games for the family, free musical entertainment, prize giveaways and food vendors.

The Virginia Beach Beast Master Car Crusher, Don Whitlow's 1964 Ford Thunderbolt and several unusual cars from Little Joe's Autos will be on display.

Live musical entertainment will be provided by Bobby Messano and his New Blues Orchestra, Sterling Riggs' Elvis Presley Show and Intersection Records recording artists the Mann Sisters.

Host for the program will be Tim Beasley of Virginia Beach, who will appear as the Amazing Car-Nut, a take-off on comedian Johnny Carson's ``Karnak'' character.

The goal of the event is to raise money for the Sharon Carey Medical Scholarship Fund, which Carey created in memory of his wife, who died of leukemia. The fund, which is administered by the Chesapeake General Hospital Auxiliary, will provide scholarship money to students from Chesapeake or children of employees of Norfolk Naval Shipyard employee, where Carey works as an illustrator.

``There are a lot of good people out there who have unfortunately been touched by bad times because of cancer,'' Carey said. ``This event will bring money into the city, bring people into Chesapeake and help raise money for medical scholarships. It's a way to punch and kick back at diseases that have taken many of our loved ones.'' MEMO: Admission to the Chesapeake Hot Rod Jamoree is free, but donations to

the Sharon Carey Medical Scholarship Fund are welcomed. Car entries on

the day of the show are $15 per vehicle; advance entries are $12.

Registration on the day of the show takes place from 8-11 a.m. More
