With the dedication of its new Cancer Treatment Center this week, Chesapeake General Hospital becomes a complete medical center.
Now, there's almost nothing that can happen to the human body that would require a patient to leave town for treatment.
The opening of the new $1.56 million, state-of-the-art facility is another milestone in the city's maturing process. It's one more indication that Chesapeake is no longer just the sprawling suburbs of another city, but a complete community in its own right.
It will be a comfort to the 400-or-so cancer patients in the city to know that the best treatment medical science has to offer is no further away than a short ride down Battlefield Boulevard. The last thing people who are sick need is the stress and additional cost of having to travel out of town for therapy. The new center will spare them that.
The people of Chesapeake have a strong sense of pride for their local hospital, and this important final step in creating a full-service medical center strengthens those feelings.
