FUN TIMES: DOUMAR'S STILL SERVES UP FOOD WITH A '50S TOUCH

SINCE I'VE BEEN writing this column, my parents, grandparents and other assorted relatives and friends of relatives have started telling me stories about things they used to do when they were young. Sadly, a lot of the places they went to have closed or have been resurrected under a different name and different management.

Through the years, however, a few places have resisted change. Doumar's is one of the few.

Doumar's is one of the oldest fast-food places in the country. Established in 1933 - 19 years before the first McDonald's was even off the drafting table, Doumar's has infinite personality.

Along with a very 1955 motif, Doumar's still has carhop service, meaning that a waitress will come out to your car and take your order so that you get to eat in your car like in all those cool '50s movies.

That makes Doumar's a great date place. Prices have escaped inflation, so you and your honey can probably eat for less than $5. For example, a giant banana split is under $4.

Doumar's is located at 20th Street and Monticello Avenue in Norfolk. Its open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. (and sometimes later on Friday and Saturday).

But if downtown Norfolk is too far away or if retro makes you sick, here are some other time-tested activities.

Over by Pembroke Mall in Virginia Beach, there is an ice skating rink. It has been there for years and years but I had not the slightest idea it existed. It's called Iceland and is at 4915 Broad St. There is open skating Fridays from 8:30 to 11 p.m.; Saturdays from noon to 3 p.m. and 8:30 to 11 p.m.; and Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 8 to 10 p.m. Admission is $5.25 and skate rental is $1.50. Call 490-3907.

If you'd rather do wheels, try the College Park Skating Center. They have a ``teen skate'' Fridays and Saturdays, when they play decent music from 7 p.m. till midnight. Admission is $4.75 and 75 cents for skate rental. The rink is at 964 S. Military Highway. Call 420-0187. MEMO: Alicia Luma's Fun Times column is published regularly in Teenology.
