Dr. Carl McClellan Hill, a Virginia born educator who earned a reputation for his concern and openness to students, died Tuesday, April 4, 1995, in Hampton.
He was the fourth of eight children born to William Franklin and Sarah Rowe Hill of the Berkley area of Norfolk. His higher education career experiences spanned a period of more than 50 years, being associated with North Carolina A & T University, Tennessee State University and Kentucky State University. Following his retirement from the presidency of Kentucky State University, he was invited to serve as interim president of Hampton Institute (University). He was later named the Institute's 11th president.
Survivors are his devoted wife, Helen Collins Hill; a foster daughter, Doris H. McGhee of Cleveland, Ohio; a stepson, Ernest C. Rose, M.D., of Charleston, Ill.; a brother, Lester Hill of Richmond; three sisters, Colon H. Baker and Elsie Hewitt, both of Norfolk, and Sarah Cooke of Richmond.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in First Presbyterian Church, Hampton. Burial will follow in Hampton University Cemetery. O.H. Smith & Son Funeral Home, Newport News, is handling arrangements.
