ST. BRIDES RESTRICTS INMATES AFTER DEATH

Inmates at St. Brides Correctional Center have been on lockdown since March 20, when an inmate was discovered dead of a heroin overdose in the prison's Building A3.

The death of Sheldon S. ``Butch'' Keeling has prompted an investigation by local and state police and by the Department of Corrections' Internal Affairs Division, according to employees of the Corrections Department.

Department spokesman Jim Jones said Thursday he could neither discuss the case nor confirm that Keeling died of a drug overdose.

``The cause of death of Keeling is under investigation at this point,'' Jones said. ``That investigation is expected to be completed within a few weeks.''

``I'm not prepared to say anything more than that,'' Jones said.

Keeling, 38, had been in prison since July 1978.

He had been sentenced to 51 years for abduction, malicious wounding and grand larceny.

He became eligible for parole in 1987, but has been turned down repeatedly.
