READY TO RUN

Registrations are being accepted for the 12th annual Nags Head Woods 5K Run, scheduled for Saturday, May 13.

The community event is expected to attract more than 450 runners to race along the narrow sandy road that winds through the Nags Head Woods Preserve.

With more than 40 Outer Banks businesses serving as sponsors, the event will likely generate nearly $20,000 to support The Nature Conservancy's efforts at Nags Head Woods.

``I've been involved in competitive runs for a number of years, and I don't care what size run you're talking about - whether it's thousands of runners or just 75 or so in a little community race - this is one of the best-organized events I've ever run in,'' said Larry Gray, whose business, Gray's Family Department Store, is a longtime sponsor of the race. ``And the fact that the run course is through the woods makes it very special.''

In addition to Gray's, other major sponsors of the 1995 run include: Belcross Beverage Co. and Miller Lite; Awful Arthur's Oyster Bar; Black Pelican Oceanfront Cafe; Goombay's Grille and Raw Bar; Nags Head Hammocks; North Banks Rotary Club; Ocean Atlantic Rentals; Outer Banks Chrysler; Pigman's Bar-b-que; Pine Island Racquet Club; Stop N Shop Convenience & Deli and Tortuga's Lie.

The registration fee for this year's run is $13. The first 400 people to register will receive a Nags Head Woods Run T-shirt.
