Farm Fresh will open a 53,000-square-foot grocery store in Newport News. The supermarket is the company's newest style and includes a Farmco Drug store, delicatessen, video department, imported foods, carryout food and a florist, according to Divaris Real Estate Inc. Divaris leases the shopping center. The supermarket also will have a bakery, fish and butcher shops as well as a big wine and beer department. Industrial activity grew in the Carolinas and Virginia for the 18th consecutive month, but a survey of purchasing managers by the College of Charleston in South Carolina suggests the pace is slowing. The National Association of Purchasing Management's Regional Index was at 53.57 percent for March, meaning more than half of the managers surveyed said business was as good or better than during February. But that was down from February's index of 55.98 percent. In March 1994 it was 60.75 percent. Despite the March decline, overall economic activity remained strong. Virginia Power said it has introduced a program to finance and lease energy-saving equipment used by its business and government customers.
