Police are looking for a 35-year-old woman who apparently disappeared early Sunday after going to a convenience store to make a phone call.
At 9 a.m. - eight hours after Helene V. Bingham left the 2800 block of Shiflett Court - her purse was found near a pay phone at a 7-Eleven at Lynnhaven Parkway and Lynnhaven Road.
Her friends said she had money when she left, but none was in her purse. Bingham hasn't been seen or heard from since.
Police spokesman Lou Thurston said there aren't any apparent signs of foul play but the case is at least suspicious because her purse was left behind. Family members said Bingham never went anywhere without her purse.
They said she may also be suffering from some mental instability.
Bingham has been in the city only a few weeks after traveling here from the West Coast to stay with friends.
Bingham is white, about 5 feet tall and weighs 105 pounds. She has hazel eyes and reddish-brown hair. She was last seen wearing dark jeans, a tan T-shirt with writing on the back, a blue-hooded windbreaker and white tennis shoes.
Anyone with information about Bingham is asked to call 427-0000. ILLUSTRATION: Bingham
