The College of William and Mary's board voted Friday to raise the cost of attending the school 2.9 percent, to $9,110 a year, for in-state undergraduates.
Out-of-state undergraduates will face a 5.8 percent increase, to $18,800 a year.
Total costs include room and board. Tuition and fees will go up 3.2 percent - to $4,738 - for in-state undergraduates and 6.9 percent - to $14,428 - for out-of-state students.
``The state continues to require a cap on tuition of 3 percent for in-state and 7.5 percent for out-of-state students,'' Samuel Jones, vice president for planning and budget, said at the Board of Visitors' meeting.
``We sought to keep the total costs, which 80 percent of the students at the college pay, within these same ranges.''
Some students, however, feel the increase will hurt.
``Even a small increase in tuition means there are things I will have to go without,'' said Ian Heiman, a junior from Northern Virginia.
Others said an education at W&M was worth the price. ``I'm not happy with the increase at all,'' said sophomore Paul Chandler of Fairfield, Conn., ``but economically it is still a good deal for an out-of-state student.''
The board also appointed a California psychology professor as the new dean of arts and sciences. Carol Jacklin of the University of Southern California will replace David Lutzer this summer. by CNB
