Reporter Mason Peters, center, chats with Vernon James, right, a
retired legislator, and Marc Basnight, president pro tem of the
North Carolina General Assembly, at the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station
at Elizabeth City on Friday. Peters, honored on his 80th birthday,
received a special commendation by Gov. James B. Hunt Jr. Peters has
been a journalist since he was 18. He has been covering North
Carolina politics for Virginian-Pilot for a decade.
