GEORGE WASHINGTON HEADS FOR SEA

ILLUSTRATION: MARTIN SMITH-RODDEN

Staff

The nuclear aircraft carrier George Washington steams past the

Portsmouth Naval Hospital as a sailor watches from Hospital Point.

After three months of maintenance and repairs, the carrier and its

crew of 3,000 left the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth Friday

morning and headed straight for sea to conduct training operations.
