WORTH MORE THAN THE PAPER IT'S PRINTED ON

GOOD NEWS for pack rats comes from magazine publisher Doug Watson of Wisconsin. Paper, all types of it, is in, says Watson, who, along with his wife, Judy, has been producing a monthly called Paper Collectors' Marketplace since 1987.

Old post cards, magazines, movie and sports memorabilia and many other paper items may be worth more than the paper they're printed on - a lot more, according to Watson. In addition to your attic, look to garage sales, flea markets and antique shops. You might uncover a valuable celebrity autograph, piece of sheet music, old map or post card.

Buried in that closet clutter might be an autograph of old-time actor Adolphe Menjou, which the March issue of Marketplace says might be worth $60. If you come across the April 13, 1962, issue of Life magazine with Richard Burton and Liz Taylor on the cover, you might be able to sell it for $150, provided its Mantle and Maris baseball cards are intact, says Watson.

The March issue of the magazine features stories on autographs, paper milk bottle caps, post cards from the Wild West and advertising trade cards from the Victorian era, in addition the usual pages of advertising - listings of paper wanted and paper for sale.

For a sample copy of the magazine, send $2 with your request to Paper Collectors' Marketplace, P.O. Box 128VP, Scandinavia, WI 54977-0128. A yearly subscription costs $17.95. ILLUSTRATION: Photo of a 1942 issue of Life.
