CHESAPEAKE BAY ACADEMY is in the midst of its most successful athletic season.
The school for learning disabled youths once limited its sporting activities to soccer, but it took up boys basketball and girls cheerleading this winter.
After a slow start on the court, things really got rolling with the addition of transfer player Chris Johnson.
Johnson helped the team recover from a winless start to finish fourth in the six-school Eastern Tidewater Independent School Conference tournament. He scored 63 points in one game and was named to the all-tournament team.
Dolphins teammate Adam White was named the conference player of the year. Additional awards went to Chris Scollan for making the team's first basket, to Spencer Holt for scoring his first basket, and to Tyree Joyce as the most improved player.
The athletes also got a recent visit from Hampton Roads Admirals defenseman Chris Phelps, who read them a couple of stories, answered questions and signed autographs.
``He discussed high-interest, relevant topics and encouraged the students to read as much as possible,'' said Mary Anne Dukas, head of school. ``Support from role models like Mr. Phelps is a powerful motivator for hesitant readers.''
Scholarships.
The Virginia Beach Jaycees are currently accepting applications for the fourth Dusty Hinnant/Hugh Kitchin Memorial Scholarship of $1,500. Candidates must be senior high students graduating from a Virginia Beach public, private or parochial school. It is open to both males and females based on a combination of financial need, academic achievement, personal development and active involvement in the sport of surfing.
Application deadline is April 15 and they can be obtained by calling the ECSC Hotline at 557-6140.
The Beach FC Travel Soccer Club has five scholarships of $500 each available to graduating high school seniors - the first two being the Bob Sokolinsky awards to one male and one female graduate. For more information, call Anne Price at 456-0165.
Son of a King.
Kyle Petty, son of NASCAR great Richard Petty and a success on the Winston Cup circuit in his own right, will make his second annual appearance at Hall Auto Mall Wednesday as part of the Concerned Citizens Advocating Traffic Safety program.
Petty's Coors Light Pontiac Grand Prix will be on display, along with displays from the Car Club Council of Hampton Roads.
Petty will sign autographs from 5 to 6:30 p.m. His car will be on display from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Hall Auto Mall is at 3152 Virginia Beach Blvd. The event is free and open to the public.
Jamboree.
The Virginia Beach Sports Club will hold its 42nd annual Jamboree April 24 at the Sheraton Inn Oceanfront conference center at 36th Street.
The annual banquet is where the club presents its yearly sports awards and names its Sportsman of the Year.
