ODU LIFTER MAKES A BIG SPLASH EVEN WHEN SHE'S NOT DIVING

Just like Clark Kent's secret identity was Superman, Old Dominion's Heather Drallos is much more than a diver on the swim team.

Drallos' secret identity is that of a weightlifter. She came upon this sport thanks to her fiance and has found success since.

``Last year our pool at school was broken down,'' said the senior from Citrus Heights, Calif. ``I was bored so Jim Schoffstall, my fiance, suggested I go to the gym with him, and I found it to be interesting.''

And interested she was. Drallos began to compete in a couple meets after watching Schoffstall and has built success of her own.

At the USPF College Nationals, Drallos took no prisoners. She finished first in the three basic powerlifts - bench, squat and deadlift - and was named an All-American. Drallos squatted 380 pounds, bench-pressed 140, and her deadlift weight was 348. All of that for a combined total of 868.

Aside from that, Drallos has the Virginia state record in bench press at 165, deadlift at 348 and squat at 380. Her total on all three of 893 is also a state record.

During her diving season her coach wasn't keen on her lifting habits and wanted her to focus on her diving. After the season, she had only a month to train.

``I was surprised that I did so well,'' Drallos said. ``I hope to continue competing because it is a lot of fun.''

Schoffstall, a former ODU wrestler, finished second in his weight class and also was named an All-American. He squatted 601 pounds, benched 407 and had a deadlift weight of 556. All of that for a combined 1,564 pounds.
