Shawn Hobson, the All-Tidewater basketball Player of the Year from Granby High, was named to the Associated Press Group AAA all-state team Sunday.
Churchland guard D.J. Dunbar, named to the second team, was the other South Hampton Roads player to be honored.
Hobson, a 6-foot-5 senior forward, averaged 22.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 4.3 steals in leading Granby to a 20-3 season and the Eastern District regular-season title. He shot 51.2 percent from the field, including 46.7 percent from 3-point range, and 74.6 percent from the line.
Dunbar, last year's All-Tidewater Player of the Year, averaged 20.7 points and shot 61 percent from the field this season as Churchland went 21-5.
Hobson was joined on the first team by AP player of the year Tinail Harris of state champion Potomac, Brett Harper of runner-up Kecoughtan, Petersburg's Marco Harrison and Derrick Hines of William Fleming.
Potomac's Kendall Hayes is the AP coach of the year.
Harris, a 6-foot-4 senior, averaged 20.9 points and 8.7 rebounds. His Panthers defeated Kecoughtan, 62-53, in the Group AAA title game. Harper, a 6-3 senior, led the Peninsula District in scoring with a 21.1 regular-season average and finished with a 21.8 mark in 30 games. Harrison, a 6-9 senior, averaged 17.4 points, 19 rebounds and 6.5 blocked shots for Petersburg. Hines, a 5-8 senior, is a first-team AP pick for the second consecutive year. This season he averaged 18.6 points and 6.3 assists.
With Dunbar on the second team is another Kecoughtan player, Nsilo Abraham, Potomac's Rolan Roberts and Michael Horton and Daymond Jackson of T.C. Williams. ILLUSTRATION: Shawn Hobson
