ALICE R. WHITLEY

Alice Rowell Whitley, native and, with the exception of several years in New York City, lifelong resident of Smithfield, Va., died Monday, April 10, 1995, in Newport Convalescent Center, Newport News, at the age of 82.

She was the widow of George Franklin Whitley Jr., a judge of the Fifth Judicial Circuit of Virginia from 1966 to 1977. Mrs. Whitley was the daughter of the late Grace Warren Rowell and James R. Rowell Jr.

She received a B.S. degree from Longwood College in 1934 and M.A. degree from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., in 1936.

She was a lifelong member of the Smithfield Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years, a member emeritus of the Shakespeare Class, a member of the Colonel William Allen Chapter of the DAR, and a past member of the Smithfield Woman's Club.

Mrs. Whitley is survived by two daughters, Sue W. Norton of New York City and Lelia Brock Whitley Brandis of Chester, Va., and by three grandchildren, Mary Julia Brandis, Roland Buford Brandis IV and Elizabeth Warren Norton. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Claude M. Whitley of Richmond.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, April 12, at 2 p.m. in Ivy Hill Cemetery with Dr. Donald R. Rhoton officiating.

The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Smithfield Baptist Church, 100 Wainwright Drive, Smithfield, Va. 23430, the Isle of Wight County Museum, 103 Main St., Smithfield, Va. 23430, or a favorite charity. Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield, is handling arrangements.
