OUTER BANKS ANGLERS REELING IN FISH OF ALL STRIPES

Beautiful weather and rising water temperatures resulted in good weekend fishing over southern portions of the Outer Banks. On Hatteras Island, where the water was considerably warmer, pier fishermen landed nice-size sea mullet, toadfish, puppy drum, trout and flounder. Avon Pier reported flounder up to 5 pounds, 2 ounces.

Surf fishing was also good on Hatteras Island. Toadfish and sea mullet were landed along the beach from Avon to Frisco. Some speckle and gray trout were taken on artificial baits in the surf near the Cape Hatteras lighthouse on Saturday morning. Drum fishing at Cape Point was excellent over the weekend; 18 big drum were beached Friday night, between 25 and 30 Saturday night, and around 40 Sunday evening. Most of the fish were released, including a 40-pounder caught by Norman Bradford of Nags Head.

Offshore fishing was good with charters out of Oregon Inlet landing yellowfin tuna weighing up to 74 pounds. A handful of dolphin and a few wahoo were also taken.

Yellowfin tuna fishing was also good off Hatteras. Additionally, the headboat Miss Hatteras reported plenty of big blues taken Sunday and nine bluefin tuna released.

Bottom fishing and drum fishing should continue good on Hatteras Island. Fishing should gradually improve along the northern beach area as fish migrate north with the arrival of warmer water. by CNB
