Two Pennsylvania men were injured Tuesday when a private plane crashed near the Tangier Airport at Tangier Island, state police spokeswoman Tammy Van Dame said.
They were the only occupants of the 1978 Mooney M-2OK plane.
At 1:25 p.m. the aircraft was attempting to land when it crashed. It ran about 40 yards off the runway, shearing off the left wing, Van Dame said.
State police arrived shortly after the crash. The men were taken by Maryland state police Medivac helicopter to the Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md.
The pilot, 56-year-old William James Hart, of Media, Pa., suffered head and spinal injuries. His passenger 65-year-old John P. Jones, of Sicklerville, Pa., received minor lacerations, Van Dame said.
The plane was traveling from Debonaire Flyers Inc. out of West Chester, Pa., and was headed for Tangier Airport, Van Dame said.
The investigation was turned over to the Federal Aviation Administration, which is scheduled to be at the crash site today, Van Dame said.
