BLUEGRASS MUSICIANS STAGE FREE JAM

If you are a bluegrass musician with a yen to perform before an appreciative audience, bring your instrument Saturday to Knox Automotive.

The monthly Bluegrass Jam begins at 7 and continues until all are too weary to play another lick.

``We started this last month, had about 100 people, and played till midnight,'' said John Knox, who is hosting the event. ``There's a lot of interest in this.''

There is also a lot of listener interest, and the free jam is for anyone who likes to kick back and enjoy Southern string band folk music. Bring lawn chairs and coolers.

``This is strictly bluegrass, no country. Anyone who wants to play - c'mon,'' said Knox, who began the monthly jams ``because of pretty strong interest here, and because a lot of musicians are looking for a place to play.''

The event is strictly informal. When the mood strikes, and you feel you're tuned up, head for the stage.

A feature band is offered during each session. Saturday's musicians are County Seat, a Portsmouth group.

``Fellows from other groups may come by and play individually,'' said Knox, who played with one of the best-known groups of the 1960s, Cripple Creek.

Currently, he is a listener ``but,'' he said, ``I may get back into it.''

The Bluegrass Jams will be a monthly affair, but the dates will vary.
