GRYMES NAMED DEAN AT CAMP

Robert J. Grymes Jr. has been named Dean of Instruction and Student Development at Paul D. Camp Community College, where he has been interim dean since September 1984.

Grymes stepped in on loan from Tidewater Community College to fill temporarily the vacancy created by the illness of Dean Nancy Sandberg. He subsequently decided to seek the position on a permanent basis when the search for a new dean began. He officially assumes the position May 16.

Grymes has served as dean of Instruction and Student Services at Tidewater Community College since 1981. Prior to that, he was at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College in Richmond, where he served as the founding dean of the western campus and as assistant provost and director of continuing education at the Parham Road campus.

His educational experience also includes service as assistant principal at Oscar F. Smith High School and as classroom teacher and assistant principal at Deep Creek Junior High School, both in Chesapeake. He is a member of the Adjunct Faculty at Old Dominion University, where he teaches graduate classes on the community college.

Grymes has a bachelor's degree in education from Old Dominion University. He received a master's degree in administration and supervision and an educational doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Virginia.

He also has completed graduate study at the College of William and Mary and Virginia Tech, and a Program on College Management at Carnegie Mellon University.

During the past 22 years, Grymes has been involved in all aspects of community college operations and has provided leadership in academic planning and policy-making. He represents the Virginia Community College System on the State Council for Higher Education's Instructional Programs Advisory Committee and is chair of the Academic Affairs Committee of the Tidewater Virginia Consortium for Higher Education.

Grymes and his wife, Elva Jane, live in Virginia Beach. They have two sons, Christopher, a graduate student in East Carolina University's school of Music, and Jay, a music major who will graduate from Virginia Commonwealth University in May.
