Mrs. Helen Mildred Gossett Whaley, 82, resident of 5131 Kenwood Drive, died Tuesday morning in Durham Regional Hospital following a period of declining health.
She was born and raised in Elkmont, Tenn., and graduated from high school in Swain County. Mrs. Whaley had been a resident of Norfolk, Va., for 51 years and moved to Durham in 1991. She was the daughter of the late Mack Douglas and Dora Weeks Whaley. She was a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church in Chesapeake.
Mrs. Whaley is survived by her husband, Mr. Soloman Frank Whaley; two daughters, Mrs. Geraldine W. Cotton and Mrs. Peggy Ann W. Howard, both of Durham; one sister, Mrs. Hazel Wilford of Norfolk; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in Clements Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Don Chasteen. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening in the funeral chapel.
