A Hampton tax preparer was sentenced Monday to two years in prison for preparing false federal tax returns, the Internal Revenue Service said.
Robert E. Herring pleaded guilty Jan. 30 in U.S. District Court to seven counts of helping to prepare more than 400 fraudulent federal income tax returns. Court documents said the cumulative tax deficiency on the returns prepared by Herring was between $70,000 and $120,000.
Herring also agreed to file correct tax returns for 1988 through 1993 and to pay all taxes, interest and penalties.
His sentence also included one year's supervised release, the IRS said.
