A spectacular fire that burned for more than two hours destroyed as many as four buildings at a Phoebus-area lumberyard early Wednesday.
The Slaughter Lumber Co. at 50 N. Mallory St. caught fire shortly after 1 a.m., said Jeff Pereira, spokesman for the Hampton Fire Department.
Four outbuildings that were used for warehouses were saved, he said.
Pereira said late Wednesday that fire investigators were still attempting to determine the cause of the fire late Wednesday.
The fire was brought under control about 3 a.m., with firefighters still extinguishing hot spots at 9.
One firefighter suffered minor smoke inhalation, Pereira said.
Several utility poles were damaged by the fire, disrupting service to almost 1,200 customers in the Phoebus and Buckroe Beach sections of the city.
