Rust-colored water flowed from taps in neighborhoods along Little Creek Road and Chesapeake Boulevard on Wednesday morning after an overnight problem in a booster tank, officials of the Department of Utilities said.
The problem was caused by sediment stirred from the bottom of lines running to the homes after a valve in the Little Creek booster-station tank malfunctioned.
Mechanics were sent to flush fire hydrants and repair the valve in the tank, which holds 3 million gallons.
Anyone whose clothes were discolored after being washed in the rusty water can obtain a special detergent free by calling 441-2771.
