Newport News Shipbuilding won a $6.6 million contract from the Navy this week to overhaul the destroyer Stump. Work on the Norfolk-based warship, which will have to be drydocked, should be finished by November. The giant Peninsula shipyard got back into the Navy ship repair business a few years ago as Navy shipbuilding work began to dry up.
