NEWPORT NEWS YARD WINS $6.6 MILLION CONTRACT

Newport News Shipbuilding won a $6.6 million contract from the Navy this week to overhaul the destroyer Stump. Work on the Norfolk-based warship, which will have to be drydocked, should be finished by November. The giant Peninsula shipyard got back into the Navy ship repair business a few years ago as Navy shipbuilding work began to dry up. The move has prompted complaints from smaller shipyards in the region that depend on Navy repair jobs. (Staff) by CNB
