Maryland sophomore Joe Smith is expected to make it official today by announcing his intention to enter the NBA draft during a noon press conference at Maury High School.
The 6-foot-10 Smith was an All-American and The Associated Press national Player of the Year. He also won the Naismith Award as the nation's top college basketball player.
Smith, a 1993 Maury graduate, attended Maryland's basketball banquet Wednesday night, accompanied by a police escort. He did not comment publicly about his future.
Maury coach Jack Baker said he was asked by Smith's mother, Letha, to set up a press conference, at which time Joe Smith would declare himself eligible for the June 28 draft. Smith will be accompanied by Maryland assistant coach Art Perry, a former Old Dominion assistant.
