Thousands of sailors and Marines arrived home Friday after six

months in the Mediterranean Sea and Persian Gulf. The 14-ship armada

carried more than 12,200 troops - about 7,000 of them based in

Hampton Roads. When the carrier Eisenhower docked about 3:30 p.m.

Friday in Norfolk, Pamela Hoffman's daughter, Kristeena, 3, and her

father, John Mercer of New Jersey, greeted her. This was the first

cruise to assign women to combat ships such as the Eisenhower.

Thousands of well-wishers turned out for the homecomings along the

Navy's waterfront and at air bases in Norfolk and Virginia Beach

where squadron planes landed Thursday.
