Surgeon general nominee Henry Foster will speak at Hampton University's commencement exercises, school officials said.
Since his nomination by President Clinton, Foster has been under fire from anti-abortion groups and conservative legislators. Foster admitted that he has performed abortions during his medical career.
Foster will speak at the May 14 ceremony. He is scheduled go before the Senate for confirmation hearings May 2.
If confirmed, Foster would be the second African American to serve as surgeon general.
He would succeed Joycelyn Elders, who also is black. Elders, who spoke at the university's Black Family Conference last month, left her post under pressure last December after suggesting that children be taught about masturbation.
Foster teaches obstetrics and gynecology at Maharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn. He is also the senior scholar in residence at the Association of Academic Health Centers in Washington. by CNB
