PIER FISHING FOR SPECKLED TROUT REPORTED BETTER

Pier fishing for speckle trout along the northern beaches improved Friday. The best action was reported from Nags Head Pier, where around 30 two-pound trout were landed on white bucktails during the morning. Pier anglers also caught a few croaker, toadfish and skates.

Sea mullet fishing continued at a steady pace on Hatteras Island, providing piers with plenty of action. Most of the mullet have been taken on bloodworms and shrimp. Plenty of nice toadfish and some small croaker have also been landed by pier anglers.

Fishing has been fair in the surf around Oregon Inlet, with some small bottom fish and blues caught. Sea mullet catches have been good on both the north and south sides of Cape Point.

Trout fishing along the Hatteras beaches has slowed, with only a handful of fish taken inside ``the hook.''

Drum fishing was slow Thursday night, but should improve when winds go to the southwest.

Yellowfin tuna fishing was excellent Friday around ``the point,'' southeast of Oregon Inlet. Dark colored skirts ahead of ballyhoo have produced the best action recently.

Hatteras offshore catches included fair numbers of yellowfin tuna and a few dolphin on Friday.

Tuna fishing should be excellent both off Oregon Inlet and Hatteras this weekend. The best bet along the beach would be sea mullet in the Hatteras area.

If the water clears along the northern beaches, a run of speckle trout is a good possibility for surfcasters. by CNB
