HISTORIC GARDEN WEEK TAKE A LOOK AT LANDSCAPING AND DECORATING TALENTS WHEN VIRGINIA'S 62ND ANNUAL ROUND OF TOURS OF TOURS BEGINS SATURDAY

HISTORIC GARDEN WEEK in Virginia begins Saturday and continues through April 29, showcasing some of the most glorious displays of spring finery and home furnishings to be found.

Homes and gardens on the tour range from the most elegant antebellum estates along the Eastern Shore to contemporary and Colonial homes throughout Hampton Roads. Similarly, there are old, traditional grounds and recently created naturalized gardens.

The 62-year-old event, sponsored by member clubs of The Garden Club of Virginia, benefits the restoration of historic gardens and grounds throughout the commonwealth. Previous tours have funded such things as the restoration of grounds at the Adam Thoroughgood House in Virginia Beach, the Old Courthouse Building in Portsmouth and Bruton Parish in Williamsburg.

A 204-page tour book is available at some American Automobile Association offices and numerous other locations throughout Hampton Roads including the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce in Norfolk, Norfolk Convention and Visitors Bureau, Newport News Tourist Information Center and Hampton Visitor Center. You can also order a guidebook by sending $3 to Historic Garden Week Headquarters, 12 E. Franklin St., Richmond, Va., 23219.

Visitors on the tours are requested not to smoke, take pictures or wear heels that could damage floors. Homes and gardens will be open on the dates scheduled, regardless of weather.

For more information, call the Richmond headquarters at (804) 644-7776. ILLUSTRATION: BETH BERGMAN/Staff color photos
