Residents will have two opportunities this week to sound off publicly on the 1995-96 proposed operating budget and six-year Capital Improvement Program.
The first public hearing will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the council chambers of City Hall; the second will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Larkspur Middle School on Princess Anne Road.
A final public hearing will be held at 2 p.m. May 2 in council chambers.
Copies of the budgets are available for review at city libraries.
The $838 million proposed operating budget calls for raising real estate taxes by 4.8 cents per $100 of assessed valuation, with 3.3 cents devoted to schools and 1.5 cents for a proposed Agricultural Reserve Program. The budget also calls for imposing a new tax on cellular phones of up to $3 per month.
Residents also are invited to attend or tune in on cable access television to the City Council's deliberations on the budgets, although they will not be permitted to speak during those sessions.
The City Council will meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday in council chambers with the School Board for a special workshop. School Superintendent Sidney Faucette is expected to address the council on the school's portion of the operating budget.
Council already has held two workshops and has two more planned after this week. A final vote to adopt the budgets is scheduled May 9.
