The Ladies Professional Bowlers Tour will hold a regional competition at the Norfolk Naval Base Lanes April 21-23. It's believed to be the first time any LPBT event has been held on a naval base.
A minimum 180 average is required of amateurs who seek to participate. Entry fee is $110 for LPBA members and $140 for non-members.
With at least 60 entries, the top prize will be $1,600. The tournament has $3,000 added money and the prize fund will be paid on a 1-in-3 ratio. The last cash spot will be at least $200.
A youth and adult pro-am will be held Friday, April 21, using a 9-pin no-tap format. Shifts will be at 6:45 p.m. and 9 p.m.
Qualifying in the feature event will be Saturday, April 22, with match play Sunday at 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
The tournament will conclude Sunday about 4 p.m.

The fifth annual Naval Base Southern Region PBA Open concluded Sunday with Sam Zurich walking off with top honors. He pocketed $3,000 for his victory as he downed Virginia Beach's Gary Faulkner in the final, 204-189. Faulkner, who works in the pro shop at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven, won $1,600. He led the qualifying and had a 300 game. Another Beach bowler, Gil Salang, also rolled a 300. Salang finished 15th and won $515.
Seven other local bowlers cashed in after the tourney, which paid out $18,950 in prizes.
Al Uttecht showed why many consider him the nation's best wheelchair bowler by rolling to a victory in the fourth annual Fred Doty Memorial Wheelchair Tenpin Tournament at Indian River Lanes.
Uttecht, who sports a 190 average, defeated Roger Templar of Florida, 198-166, in the final of the unlimited scratch division of the tourney. Uttecht, from Pasadena, Calif., also led the 10 games of qualifying.
The A Division (123 average and higher) title went to Don Porpora with a 195-186 victory over fellow Floridian James Sullivan in the final. The B Division (122 and under) winner was Richard Kovacs of North Carolina, who beat local bowler Roland Van Varden, 190-170. Van Varden was top qualifier in B Division.
Fifty wheelchair bowlers vied for the $8,400 in prizes. Each winner earned $1,000.
In an associated three-game Beach Doubles scratch event, Cornell Isom of Oklahoma paired with Richmond's Jimmy May for 918 and a one-pin victory. They won $200. George Ruland and Porpora had 917. Third was Virginia Beach's Anna Korchak and Uttecht with 895. Uttecht really showed his talent with a 255 game and a 624 series.
Bowler of the Week honors go to Pam Westfall.
She slammed a women's league record 268 game in a 688 series in the Saturday Nite Classic Mixed Tenpin League at Pinboy's of Chesapeake.
Westfall closed with the big single after games of 196 and 224.
Tenpin topics: Terry Gogets just missed the 300 Club with a 299 in the Big Chiefs League at Indian River. . . . Carrie Paisley topped the local bowlers in the Queens Tournament at Petersburg with a 13th place finish. She averaged 187 in the tourney. . . . Doris Jones, who averages 158 in the Saturday Nite Mixed League at Pinboy's of Western Branch, soared past the 600 series barrier for the first time with 644. . . . The 14-year-old Lewis has a 165 average. . . . Debby Flora racked up a 259 game in the Screwballs League at Pinboy's of Norfolk. . . . Sam Defebo pitched a 267 game in the Sassy Seniors League at Pinboy's at the Beach. . . . Mary Ellen Gmoch soared 102 pins over average with her 253 game and 591 series in the Military Doubles League at Pinboy's of Military. . . . Woody Wiles joined the Century Club in the American Legion I League at Pinboy's of Norfolk with a 264 game. He averages 152. . . . With AMF assuming control of the Fair Lanes chain, there will be more than 200 centers taking part in the 1995 Coca-Cola World Cup qualifying. The finals will be held in Richmond Sept. 21-24. . . . Ben Palumbo of Buffalo, N.Y., will assume the presidency of ABC May 1. Chesapeake's Alton Forbes will move up to sixth vice president.
Duckpin data: One Norfolk and two Portsmouth teams have qualified for the Duckpin Youth Association National Championship at Hagerstown, Md. Bowlarama won the Prep title and Victory Lanes captured the Bantam and Major crowns in state competition last weekend at Richmond. Richmond won the Junior Division. final week at Bowlarama, there was only one change among the leaders. Local bowlers Joyce Akers and Dee Peirsol took over first place in women's doubles with 956. Nancy Bageant's 539 and Donald Miller's 509 continue to pace singles and George Smith and Oneil Wynne remain ahead in men's doubles with 1,021. Gerry Jones and Keith Saunders are still in front with 986 in mixed doubles. The Rabels are the team leader with 1,765. . . . Mary Peters whacked a 165 game in the Tuesday Housewives League at Bowlarama. . . . Lu Arnette, who averages 109 in the Monday Morning Mixed League at Victory Lanes, rolled a 157 game in her 372 series. . . . In the Thursday Night Ladies League, Jennifer Bell, who averages 87, racked up a 154 game. She had a triple strike. . . . Gwen Frazier pitched four strikes in a row in her 148 game in the VPA Wednesday Doubles League. . . . Cathy Hollis, who averages only 88, was five pins shy of a national ring award with her 357 series in Wednesday action. . .
