Kempsville tailback Mike Pishioneri will be named the outstanding Virginia Beach high school athlete at the Virginia Beach Sports Club Jamboree.
The 42nd annual jamboree will be held April 24 at the Sheraton Beach Inn at 36th Street.
Pishioneri, The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star Player of the Year, rushed for 1,216 yards and scored 22 touchdowns in leading Kempsville to the Beach District championship.
Featured speaker will be W.J. ``Red'' Mitchum, former University of Florida football star.
In addition to Pishioneri, 13 other high school athletes and coaches will receive awards:
Outstanding Female Athlete, Virginia Beach High Schools: Kirsty Hale, field hockey, Cox.
Outstanding Male Athlete, Virginia Beach High Schools: Ray Gatlin, football, Princess Anne.
John A. Tucker Memorial Award for Excellence in Women's Athletics: Amy Zimmerman, tennis, Tallwood; Kristy Redmon, basketball, Cape Henry Collegiate School; Jamie Lynn Cornish, cross country and indoor track, Kellam.
Dr. L. Curtis Hall Memorial Award for Excellence in Athletics Combined with Academic Achievement. Female and male winners:
Faline Phucas, volleyball and basketball, Kempsville.
Mark Dixon, soccer, Salem.
Skip Wilkins Outstanding Athlete Award for the Physically Challenged: Ryan Morrow, track and field, Cox.
Director's Award - given to a coach or student athlete whose achievements have not only been athletic but who has made significant contributions to his or her school or community. Female and male winners:
Laura Snelling, gymnastics, Kempsville.
Matthew Berdy, cross country and outdoor track, Ocean Lakes.
Male Coach of the Year: Frank Webster, football, First Colonial.
Female Coach of the Year: Patricia Bullock, field hockey, Bayside.
Joseph E. Healy Memorial Award to a Sports Club Member for major contributions to the club: To be announced at the jamboree.
Sportsman of the Year Award: To be announced at the jamboree.
Proceeds of the jamboree go to the Sports Club Scholarship Fund, which last year awarded 14 scholarships totaling $21,000 to seniors from Virginia Beach high schools. To qualify for these scholarships a senior must be in the top 10 percent of his class and letter in at least one sport.
Since the scholarship program was initiated in 1978, 196 scholarships have been awarded totaling $239,600.
