ERNEST G. MUIR

Ernest G. Muir, 73, a resident of 213 Main St., Wakefield, died Saturday, April 15, 1995, at his home. He was a native of Eccles, W.Va., and was son of the late George P. and Nell Hager Muir. He worked as a locomotive operator for International Nickel Corp. from 1952 to 1970. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a radio operator-gunner for the 410th Bomb Squadron, 94th Bomb Group. He was wounded and taken as a prisoner of war by the Germans during air raids over Rheims, France, on May 29, 1943. He was held as a POW for 23 months in Germany and Austria before being liberated at the end of the war.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Harris Muir; a son, Ernest G. Muir Jr. of Robersonville, N.C.; three daughters, Deanna M. Barney of Clinton, N.C., Katie F. Wyatt of Smithfield and Andrea F. Hellyer of Wakefield; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held in Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, on Wednesday, April 19, 1995, at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Herbert Bowman. Burial with military honors will be in Wakefield Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Waverly or Ivor Volunteer Rescue Squad.
