A captain who recently resigned from the York County Sheriff's Office has been charged with sexually abusing a child over an 11-year-period.
Sheriff Press Williams said Saturday he was stunned by the allegations against Rex K. Sulik, 43, of Yorktown. Sulik was a 23-year veteran of the sheriff's office.
``This was really a shock,'' Williams said. ``It hurts. I've known him all my life.'' Sulik was a good employee, Williams said.
Sulik was charged Friday with two counts of statutory rape, 11 counts of sodomy, six counts of crimes against nature, six counts of taking indecent liberties, two counts of aggravated sexual battery, and one additional charge of sexual misconduct, according to a press release issued by the sheriff's office. If convicted, Sulik could face multiple life sentences.
Sulik turned himself in and was released on $50,000 bail.
The crimes occurred in Yorktown from 1974 to 1985, said Hampton Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Cathy Krinick, a special prosecutor handling the case.
Sulik's accuser is a young woman who now lives out of state, Krinick said.
