The College of William and Mary has hired a director of economic development to help area businesses take advantage of the school's programs.
Ted Zoller has been charged with finding ways the college can contribute to the area economy, through training or research. In particular, college officials believe businesses can benefit from their School of Education and the M.B.A. and applied-science programs.
``This appointment opens a new chapter for the college,'' said Stewart Gamage, vice president for community relations. ``It recognizes the vital connection between William and Mary and the Peninsula. In many ways, our success is inextricably linked.''
The announcement of Zoller's arrival came just a few days before the college officially opened its Peninsula Center, a classroom and conference center in Oyster Point. The center is designed to give the college a more permanent and visible presence on the lower Peninsula and will provide a home for its part-time M.B.A. program.
Zoller, 30, is a 1987 graduate of William and Mary. He earned a master's in public administration from Syracuse University and is working toward a doctorate in public affairs at the University of Virginia. He spent seven years as a project manager for a management consulting firm in Fairfax.
Zoller said there is plenty of precedent for what William and Mary is trying to do. ``Many other regions of the country have recognized the value of coordinating investments in higher education institutions and the private sector,'' he said. ``William and Mary is well-positioned to play an instrumental role in the Virginia economy.''
