Upon reading ``Hampton Roads whiffs'' (editorial, April 9), I not only pondered the editor's question, ``So what does Hampton Roads need to get a team?'' but also my own: Should Hampton Roads be worrying about getting a major-league-baseball team at this time?
As an avid baseball fan, nothing would please me more than spending summer evenings watching my favorite players at the ballpark. But with the uncertain direction of our local economic development, under the cloud of military downsizing, I believe that baseball should wait.
In view of the recent major-league-baseball strike, I also wonder why we should add another small-market team to the list of those already having problems paying for big-market talent?
I am fully confident that, eventually, both Hampton Roads and major-league baseball will overcome their economic challenges, and we will watch the likes of Ken Griffey Jr. and Cal Ripken play in Hampton Roads. But now is not the time.
