Hats off to the Wakefield Shad Planking and to the Wakefield Ruritan Club for their donation of $1,000 to The James River Association for a fish ladder at Bosher's Dam.
The only way we can return the large numbers of transient spawning fish such as shad and herring to our rivers is to build ladders to our lakes.
The James River Association is a great start for all of us.
We also need ladders on Western Branch, Lake Prince, Burnt Mill and the lakes on the Southern Branch of the Nansemond River.
The Western Branch Lake would be a wonderful place to start. It is the lowest and tidal water comes to its base. It is in Suffolk but is owned by Norfolk. You can see it from Route 10 at Reid's Ferry, which is between downtown Suffolk and Chuckatuck.
Fish ladders would be a marvelous environmental accomplishment. They would be an educational and entertainment treat for children and adults.
I doff my hat to the James River Association for contributing to build ladders on the James. It is a great idea. We need its implementation here.
