The school system's internal auditor, Kevin A. Jones, has resigned.
Jones, who was hired in 1993 to monitor the school system's bookkeeping, boost efficiency and ensure compliance with laws and regulations, gave no reason for his departure, School Board Chairwoman June T. Kernutt said. Jones could not be reached for comment.
He announced his resignation in a letter to school officials last week; it was effective Friday. He cleaned out his office Tuesday.
Susan L. Creamer, the School Board member who urged the creation of the internal auditor position and helped hire Jones in 1993, said Jones had been impatient to make major changes and improve school employees' efficiency quickly. His eagerness had made some employees angry and suspicious, she said.
``He just said that he could not handle it anymore, that he was tired of all of it,'' Creamer said.
``Sometimes, to get a system used to an internal auditor, you have to move very carefully, because you don't want to hurt people's feelings. They might not be doing things the most efficient way. . . . But you can't just come in and say, `Change it,' and expect them to change it overnight.''
Creamer said Jones had been looking for another job this year. Jones also owns a pizza parlor in Richmond, she said.
``We will get another internal auditor in there just as fast as we can start interviewing,'' she said.
