THE FLAP over ``Hoop Dreams'' has been well-documented. A five-year project that follows two talented Chicago school boys through their prep careers, the documentary made many critics' Top 10 lists last year, but was snubbed at the Oscars. More than just chronicling the ups and downs in the lives of Arthur Agee and William Gates, it dissects the American Dream. Yours can be the final court of opinion when ``Hoop Dreams'' arrives on video Tuesday. Caveat: Set aside some time because it runs nearly three hours.

WEEKEND
``IT HAS BECOME that time of evening when people sit on their porches, rocking gently and talking gently and watching the street . . . '' A cherished memory of childhood opens James Agee's novel ``A Death in the Family,'' and Samuel Barber set these words to lyrical music in ``Knoxville: Summer of 1915.'' Austin Symphony music director Sung Kwak and soprano Janice Dixon perform this work with the Virginia Symphony Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. at Chrysler Hall. The program also includes Respighi's ``The Birds,'' Mozart's ``Exultate, jubilate'' and Beethoven's Symphony No. 4. Tickets are $15 to $34. Call 623-2310 for more information.
