CRASH INJURES CHESAPEAKE WOMAN

A Chesapeake woman was seriously injured Thursday morning in a two-car collision on I-564 West near I-64 that tied up westbound traffic for at least an hour, police said.

Donna Neal, 32, was hurt when the car her husband was driving slammed into a 1987 Dodge that had stopped in the striped safety zone about 7 a.m.

State police spokeswoman Tammy Van Dame said the driver of the Dodge, who was not identified, was experiencing car trouble and had pulled into the safety zone. He walked away from the car to get help.

The 1993 Chrysler driven by Steven Neal, 34, was attempting to cross into the safety zone from the HOV-lane when he hit the Dodge, Van Dame said. Both vehicles were total losses, she said.

Steven Neal, who was not injured, was charged with reckless driving. Donna Neal was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition Thursday night.
