George E. Koenig, 83, died April 14, 1995.
Born in Buffalo, N.Y., Mr. Koenig lived in Suffolk during the 1930s where he worked in the school system, developing vocational training partnerships for students with local businesses. In 1938, he married Bettie Ball Lummis of Suffolk, daughter of Frank L. and Bettie B. Lummis.
From Suffolk, Mr. Koenig moved to Richmond, where he worked for the Department of Education in the area of vocational/industrial training.
During World War II, Mr. Koenig served as a line officer in the U.S. Navy, primarily overseeing the repair of ships at the Brooklyn Naval Shipyard in New York. After the war, he continued to work with the Department of the Navy in Washington, D.C., as a senior training administrator for the construction and repair of ships, electronics and supporting functions, until he retired in 1972. Mr. Koenig was active in the training community, serving as president of the D.C. Chapter and regional vice president of the American Society of Training Directors.
Mr. and Mrs. Koenig lived in Warrenton from 1971 to 1986 in Warrenton Lakes. Mr. Koenig served on the Fauquier County Water and Sanitation Authority, concerned about the effect of uncontrolled growth on Warrenton. He also served as a charter member and legislative vice president of the Fauquier Chapter of NARFE. He attended the Warrenton United Methodist Church and served in many capacities there, including the building committee for the current church location.
Mr. Koenig is survived by his wife, Bettie L. Koenig; his children, Bettie K. Marconi, Frances K. Knight, Harris F. Koenig, Jane K. Terry, David A. Koenig and the late George E. Koenig Jr.; and eight grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made to Warrenton United Methodist Church.
