POLICE RAID NEARLY A DOZEN HOMES IN DRUG SEARCH

Three houses were raided early Friday in the culmination of a months-long drug investigation under the regionwide ``Operation Response.''

About eight more dwellings were to be stormed Friday night, Edenton police said. In all, 30 warrants on drug possession and sales charges were to be served in the operation.

The charges are mostly felonies and relate primarily to crack cocaine, but include some alcohol and marijuana charges, said Edenton Police officer Rhonda Copeland. Along with Edenton, officers from the Elizabeth City Police Department, the Chowan County Sheriff's office and the state Alcohol Law Enforcement agency participated in the raids.

Four people had been arrested in connection with the charges by late Friday afternoon, with many warrants outstanding, Copeland said. Suspects did not put up resistance.

``We didn't have any trouble,'' Copeland said. ``It all went over very smoothly.''

Drug raids under Operation Response have also taken place in recent months in such areas as Elizabeth City and Washington County.
