St. Augustine's flexed its muscles and Norfolk State's Chandra Sturrup soared to a meet record in the long jump Friday in the first day of the CIAA track meet at Norfolk State.
The St. Aug's men, winners of six straight Division II titles, opened the meet by taking the first three places in the shot put. Falcon athletes also won the discus, javelin, high jump and triple jump as St. Aug's piled up 76 points, 40 more than second-place Norfolk State.
Chris Coleman, two-time NCAA indoor champ in the triple jump, capped the day for the Falcons by springing to a personal-best of 53-8, more than five feet farther than his closest competitor.
Rodney Thomas, Robert Moore and Olu Tinubu swept the first three places in the shot put, although only Thomas throws it regularly. Tinubu is a discus specialist, and Moore, a 6-foot-5 230-pound basketball player, normally concentrates on the javelin.
``We were just trying to pick up some extra points,'' Tinubu said.
St. Aug's piled up 300 at last year's conference meet and could be headed toward that figure again. The Falcons have not lost a CIAA meet since 1981.
On the women's side, Sturrup, a two-time NCAA champion in the long jump, broke the 22-foot mark for the first time. Her jump was the seventh-best all-time by a female collegian, according to Track and Field News. That assumes the tailwind was the under the allowable maximum. Meet officials were planning to review the wind meter readings Friday night.
``I was right up on the board,'' Sturrup said. ``I thought I could have jumped a little better but I reached with my arms.''
Sturrup also easily won her heats in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. She holds Division II records in both events.
The Spartanettes finished the day with a comfortable lead in the team competition, picking up 30 points to second-place Hampton's 12. For Norfolk State, Angela Villman picked up eight points with a second-place finish in the long jump while DaShantia Atkinson was second in the shot put and Regina Johnson fourth.
The meet continues today at 10 a.m. with the conclusion of the field events. Running events start at noon. by CNB
